Applications for the University of California

We are rapidly approaching the opening of UC applications for the freshman entry class of 2016.  The on line application process will open on Sunday, November 1, 2015.  Interested Students will be provided an appointment with the College and Career Center to file their application.  By now all seniors should have a "take along" portfolio containing the following information:

  1. Demographic sheet
  2. CSU, UC GPA "College" eligibility sheet
  3. Working copy of their transcript.
  4. Parent Income information (copy of their 1040 first two pages)
  5. Parent's birthday mm/dd/yyyy
  6. Date of parent's marriage, separation etc.
  7. Copy of student's social security or DACA card.
  8. SAT Score report (download from college board).  If you are scheduled for the December test then that date will be provided at the time of application.
Added to the portfolio for the UC application is the response to prompts #1 (freshman prompt); and, prompt #2 (for all applicants).  PROVIDED BELOW

These items are critical to successfully completing the application process.
In the past, students have shown up at their application appointment without their personal statements (responses to prompts) completed.  Students without completed responses to prompts will not be served.  THE APPLICATION APPOINTMENT IS NOT THE TIME TO WRITE A RESPONSE.   Students must understand that a seat in the U.C . Freshman class is highly prized and the competition is stiff. Rushing to get something done usually results in a poor submission and a less than desired outcome.  As much as I would like to I will not have the time it takes to review individual essays during the application process itself.
PROMPTS for UC Admissions:
Freshman applicant prompt #1
Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
Prompt for all applicants #2
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Combined the two prompts should be approximately 1,000 words.  Well constructed (grammatically); personal (remember it is not about your family or a philosophical thought); get the reader to know you in just a few words.  The overriding question, what would make a reader elect to give you one of a very limited number of slots open to freshman admissions.
UC Applicaton Appointments:
Scheduling of appointments for completing the UC Application will be through the Counselors (Mr. Briscoe and Ms. Figueroa). (Student's can sign-up using the College and Career request sheet but they will be re-directed to the Counselors for an appointment time reservation.)
I will make myself and support analyst  available to conduct a workshop for individual academies during the off hours.  The caveat is that a teacher within the academy develops and manages the list of students scheduled to attend (a minimum of 10 required)  It will also be the responsibility of Academy leads to insure that the students have all of the required information (noted above) in their possession at the time of their appointment.

I am available to visit any of your classes to go over these requirements with your students and answer any questions they may have.  THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR BOTH CSU'S AND U.C. IS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015.

SAT and PSAT Online App

College Board has released an on-line App for the Iphone, Mac and PC with the byline "no excuses."   There is definitely no excuse for students not preparing for the PSAT or the SAT.  Once the students have created their accounts (free). they can download the app and they will receive daily SAT or PSAT/NMSQT questions as well as regularly scheduled (by them) SAT or PSAT test (approximately 10 questions).  They will also be provided hints (usually up to three) that help them reason out the answers.
